Grand Opening Coming Soon!

I’m really excited to be officially launching my new store Create by the Yard in early 2012! This past week I’ve been busy picking out all the new fabrics that the store will offer. It’s fun to browse the hundreds of amazing fabrics available, but it’s also not easy. Having to decide which of the fabrics to buy is difficult when there are so many great options. I’m happy to announce that Create by the Yard will be offering organic fabrics by:
  • Daisy Janie
  • Cloud 9
  • Birch
  • Monaluna

And designer fabrics by:

  • Moda
  • Riley Blake

Next week I’ll post the fabric collections that will be available! To stay current on the grand opening events, visit www.createbytheyard.com and sign up to receive monthly newsletters.

A Unique Book Cover

I wanted to share this link to a project tutorial on Moda Bake Shop. I just love this book cover idea. I can't wait to try it once I move to my new apartment and have my sewing machine readily available again.

Penguin Sweaters

I heard about this on the radio this afternoon and I had to share. A yarn shop called Skeinz in New Zealand is knitting sweaters for penguins who were caught in an oil spill. How wonderful and cute are these?

Pinterest Anyone?

I signed up last week for an account with Pinterest. Has anyone used it? The problem I have with it is that it makes me want to travel way too much! There are so many pins of gorgeous photos from amazing places. I initially signed up because I heard about it on Etsy, and I do think it could be a great way to advertise if it ever becomes really big, but for now it’s just fun to look at the photos. I highly suggest browsing the site if you haven’t. You need to send for an invite to sign up, or I have some to give out if you want to join. The website does tend to have a few glitches, however. For some reason I can’t upload photos, which is a bit frustrating. Overall I’m excited about it and I would recommend trying it. Here are just a few of the amazing photos that I have pinned:

My New Shop Kickoff (kind of...)!

Since I learned how to sew last year, I’ve had a bit of an obsession with fabric. I couldn’t seem to get enough, so after quite a bit of thinking; I decided to start a second Etsy shop! Its called Create by the Yard and I sell, what else, but FABRIC! After talking to some friends I decided I wanted to sell recycled fabrics along with new, designer fabrics. To start I’ve focused mainly on the recycled fabrics. I love going to thrift stores and picking out quality, used sheets and pillowcases as they tend to be the easiest fibers to work with and I can cut pieces that are large enough for any project. I’ve also had a great time finding new fabrics that I’ve never seen in stores before. I’ve been having so much fun starting my new supply shop that I can’t resist sharing some of my favorite finds!

Summer Floral Vintage Style Fabric - Recycled Bed Sheet One Yard

Vintage Pink Floral Fabric - Recycled Pillowcase Fat Quarter

Bright, Colorful Floral and Bird Fabric - 1/2 yard

I hope you like them! Also, stay tuned for a giveaway or two when I celebrate my official shop grand opening!

Happy Long Weekend!

Where has the time gone? June was such a busy month for me. I got my second Etsy shop up and running (CreatebytheYard) and had a whopping 4 sales in my original shop (Fashionablychic). Believe it or not, that is a lot for me! I don’t do much, if any, outside advertising, so I’m pleased with the way the month ended. I’ve heard many others were having a slow month so I’m glad mine was good! I’m hoping July will be even better. I started the morning with a sale, so I hope it keeps up!

My shops weren’t the only things keeping me busy. Work has been busy and the start of summer always seems to fill up quickly. I actually went to my family’s cottage and spent a couple nights. It was the first time I’ve done this in probably 10 years! It was fun, but the weather wasn’t too cooperative. I’ve started doing yoga regularly for the last couple of months, which has been such a great addition to my life. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend it. It is a great workout and relaxing at the same time. I’m looking forward to a long July 4th weekend. Hopefully I can relax and get a little reading time. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Here Goes Nothing...

Its been a while since my last blog post! Finally I have a little bit of time and motivation, so here goes nothing!

This past weekend I went to North Dakota to visit my old roommate Jenna and her son Talan.I knew North Dakota would be flat and desolate, but I didn’t know exactly how little is actually there. I left Minneapolis in the morning and after about 3 hours I cross the border into North Dakota, emerging into the land of nothing. Once I passed Fargo, there was literally nothing, no gas stations, no fast food restaurants, nothing. I did see a large statue of a buffalo, however. Another 3 hours later I finally arrive in Bismarck.

It was a great weekend! I got to meet Jenna’s son who is absolutely adorable! He is only a year and 8 months old, but I think he’s destined to be a baseball player. He can actually hold a baseball in one hand and hit it with a bat in his other hand. He is more coordinated than I am! It is always great to re-connect with old friends. I hadn’t seen Jenna in almost 4 years but it was as if we never parted ways. I just wish she didn’t live so far away.

If you’ve been watching the news at all, you’ve probably heard about the devastating flooding that is going on in that area. I was able to see it firsthand. Hopefully the people in the area will be able to catch a break and the water will recede soon.
